Snapshot – The Notch Trail, Badlands National Park

One of our most memorable hikes to date was the Notch Trail at Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Several factors contributed to it’s noteworthiness, including the fact that it started raining on us as we were descending a steep ladder made of logs. To be fair, the trail guide did say that this trail could become treacherous in the rain. It also said to wear good hiking shoes and we had on sandals, so that’s on us.

This 1.5 mile trail is moderate to difficult (depending on how you feel about climbing ladders). For us, it was moderate going up (no rain) and nerve-wracking coming down (rain). Although, the rain did stop almost as soon as we reached the bottom of the ladder. Very funny, Mother Nature.

Coming up was no problem if you don’t mind heights!

A good portion of trail was flat and easy to navigate as we wove our way through the valleys. Do expect to leave with dusty (or muddy) shoes and feet.

The view from the top was quite spectacular. It really feels like you are in another world.

If you don’t have Badlands on your list to visit, you should definitely add it. It was unlike any place we have ever seen!
