We’ve covered a lot on regular suitcases, so now we’ll weigh some pros and cons of other types of luggage.
Duffel Bags
Pros: Most do fit the carry-on size limit yet you can still fit a lot inside. In fact, you can probably fit more into a duffel bag than a regular carry-on suitcase since it can be stretched outward a bit. Cons: They can become heavy and hard to carry. Tip: Consider investing in a rolling duffel bag to make transporting it easier.
Backpacks
Since we’ve never been backpacking, we couldn’t begin to recommend which kind you should get for that Euro trip, but there are plenty of other blogs and videos out there you can check out. From an outsider’s perspective, backpacks can be good for traveling from place to place to place because they are easy to transport and prevent you from over packing. They are also small enough that they count as a carry-on and will fit nicely in Hostel lockers.
Both of us do use backpacks as our carry-on and/or personal item when we travel. We’ve found them to be excellent for holding our electronics, snacks and other items we like to have with us. We talked more about the backpacks we have in Our Favorite and Least Favorite Travel Items of 2018 blog post.
In conclusion…
If you can answer the questions above, hopefully you have a better idea of which type of luggage to buy and/or take on your next trip.
If you ask us, we say don’t try so hard to make everything fit in a smaller bag unless you have to. Why stress yourself out when you can just take a bigger bag? Typically, our go to for most vacations is one checked bag and one small-medium backpack each. This always works well for us. If you’re interested in tips on not overpacking, let us know.
Happy travels!
