Do you like scary stories? Do you like the feeling of goosebumps prickling your arms and the hair raising on the back of your neck?
If so, Savannah, Georgia, known to many as the most haunted city in America, has got you covered. From women in white, to giggling ghostly children to rattling chains, the city has many stories to tell.
We went on a ghost tour ourselves back in 2007 and, though we didn’t see any ghosts, we definitely felt the creepy chill in the air when our tour guide told us the haunted history of the city.

Savannah offers many historical walking and trolley tours, and quite a few of those are ghost tours. You can explore cemeteries, hotels, restaurants, and, for the ultimate chilling experience, one tour even drives you around in a hearse.
One stop we made was the Mercer House, whose story was the inspiration for the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt.

If you’ve ever wanted to stay in a haunted hotel, check out the Hamilton-Turner Inn, The Marshall House, 17 Hundred 90 Inn, or Kehoe House Bed and Breakfast. Guests have reported many mysterious sightings while staying here.
According to our tour guide, when taking photos at a haunted location, you will often see little orbs appear. This, they say, is a sure sign of paranormal activity. If you look closely at some of our photos, you can see a few orbs. Just a trick of the light? Or something more? (Courtney: my mama and my cousins were convinced the orbs were a sure sign the ghosts had us surrounded… I’m not convinced, but sometimes it is fun to play along.)

We also visited the Pirate’s House. Back in the 1700’s, this former inn and saloon (now a restaurant), opened for sailors who had come to port in the city. Tunnels under the inn led to the sea and many sailors met their end at the hands of pirates.
We took our tour with Old Savannah Tours, and it included dinner at the Pirate’s House.

So if you’re looking for a spooky getaway, book a trip down to historic Savannah, Georgia. Even if you don’t spot a ghost, you are sure to learn about a fascinating history and, as a bonus, you will also see some beautiful scenery.
